Internet Explorer (IE) is an integral component of Windows but is occasionally released on a different schedule from Windows. This chart shows the IE versions currently supported on each Windows OS version. An IE version leaves support on a specific Windows client OS at the same time the Windows client OS leaves Extended support. For example, support for IE8 on Windows XP will end in Apr. 2014, but support for IE8 on Windows 7 will end in Jan. Since IE is considered a component of the Windows OS and not a standalone application, organizations should assume that all versions of IE on a Windows OS that has left Extended support will no longer receive updates on that OS. There is a unique difference with IE10. IE10 is available on Windows 7 and support for IE10 on Windows 7 ends in Jan. However, IE10 is also available on Windows 8, but not on Windows 8.1. This is a departure from past relationships between a client OS and IE versions, where previously, all versions of IE on an OS remained available as the OS was upgraded. According to Microsoft’s stated product lifecycle policy, this new relationship means that support for IE10 on the first release of Windows 8 will end in Oct.
